Participation in international conference

15. 12. 2017 – The historic Belgian town of Gent hosted a two-day conference “Freedom under pressure” last week. The event, attended by one expert from our office, focused on the latest developments in the area of privacy and personal data protection in relation to security and interconnection of vast information systems.

Apart of professional public, the conference was attended by representatives of the European Commission, European Data Protection Supervisor as well as by people from national data protection authorities.

“A vivid debate and reasoning presented by the speakers confirmed that privacy protection plays more than topical role in relation to the ever expanding powers of security services. Namely contributions about big data processing within police systems with the purpose of predicting and preventing criminal activity can be appreciated as salutary,” said Mr Jan Oščipovský, expert from the office´s supervisory department.

Given the current EU efforts to effectively reform the data protection landscape can be expected that further discussions on this topic will follow.
