The meeting started with a lecture presented by Ms Soňa Matochová, head of the office´s analytical unit, who informed about the essential elements of the existing data protection model compared with the forthcoming general data protection regulation. “We live in times when striking a balance between free flow of information and protection of personal data and privacy is necessary”, Ms Matochová said when explaining the rationale of the GDPR.
Next part of the presentation centered on general principles and new elements provided by the GDPR and dealt also with the role of the office in its capacity of a supervisory authority. The objective of the subsequent discussion co-moderated by Mr Jiří Měsíček from the international department was the comparison of the approach to data protection in the U.S. and the Czech Republic. Also discussed were specific topics like misuse of personal data in social networks or handling of complaints related to transborder data breaches.
This roundtable was another of the awareness-raising events devoted to GDPR which were attended or even organized by the office´s experts. The year 2017 saw about ninety of such seminars or conferences.
